By the 1930’s the Churchward series of goods vans built from 1902 onwards were starting to show their age and also were being superseded by the more modern larger bodied Railway Clearing House designs of van. This situation led to the large scale commencement of scrapping of these vehicles during that decade. War time wagon shortages led to the updating and the repairs of the survivors, these lasting up to the end of steam and beyond in departmental use. When the vans were scrapped the underframes were cut up for the metal value but often sound bodies were retained for use on the railways as store huts, lamp huts, shunter’s huts and many other purposes. Most station yards had one tucked in a corner somewhere. Those not needed on the railway were sold to farmers etc and even today many can still be found.
The kit is available in several different van heights. The drawing shows the 7ft 6ins high version.
